This experiment introduces students to basic electrical components, instruments, and safe procedures for setting up circuits. Understanding proper usage of wires, power sources, meters, switches, and loads is crucial for performing accurate experiments.
Circuits consist of a closed path for current to flow, with components connected in series or parallel. Understanding the placement of instruments is critical:
Ammeters: Measure current; must be connected in series so all current passes through the device. Always ensure the range of the ammeter is sufficient to prevent damage.
Voltmeters: Measure potential difference; must be connected in parallel across the component of interest. The internal resistance of voltmeters is very high to minimize current draw.
Multimeters: Can measure current, voltage, and sometimes resistance. Correctly select the mode and range, and connect according to ammeter or voltmeter rules.
Switches: Allow control of current flow. Always insert switches in series with the load to control the circuit safely.
Resistors/Bulbs: Represent loads in the circuit. Bulbs also visually indicate current flow via illumination.
Wires: Connect components. Ensure firm connections; loose wires can cause high resistance or open circuits.
